Background of La Bastiane
Let me tell you a story…
...about the La Bastiane campsite which will celebrate its 35th birthday this year.
Everything began at the end of the sixties, when Viviane and Bernard Defert sold their butchers and delicatessen shop in the Paris area to set up home in the South of France, in the land of the cicadas, near the sea in the Var.
With the help of Grandfather Georges, they bought a piece of land on which they built a canning factory, a house and kept a nature area for the first campers in the summer. As the canning factory declined with the arrival of supermarkets, the campsite, opened in 1973, saw a boom during the prosperous period from 1976 to 1984.
The customers came from all over...
England with the first Tour Operators, Belgium and the Netherlands and of course France.
COMFORT,
CALM, NATURE...
were the key words for the La Bastiane campsite at the time, along with cleanliness and friendliness, a guarantee of success and longevity. In 1989, the grandfather eased off a bit and managers were appointed for the appending shops. The Defert family delegated a part of its work in order to devote more time to the trend of the nineties: the Club atmosphere with the organisation of morning water sports, the creation of the Tots’ Club, the volley-ball or tennis tournaments. The Cabaret evenings or theatre-cafés, a 100% creation of the Team of La Bastiane.
Nowadays...
The family holiday and Club spirit still remains today, and the activities and services are more “professionalised”. Didier and Christophe Defert, the new managers after the well-deserved retirements of their parents and grand-parents, have decided to keep the ideas of their elders while building for the future and the new generations.
Around them, a structure is forming enabling to continue the name and spirit of our La Bastiane campsite near the sea in the Var and highly sought by our customers. Experiences are multiplied in order to meet demand as much as possible.
The start of this century saw the arrival of rented accommodation, the bungalows, chalets and other mobile homes which are gradually outdoing demand for the traditional caravan or family tent. The demand is there, we have to satisfy it... The most difficult situation now is finding a happy medium between the various types of open-air holidays.

The creation in 2007 of the new children’s pool, the multi-sport platforms, the baby block, the mini disco: all this to meet with the expectations of the families...
